Censorship by Google and Yahoo

Both Google and Yahoo have been criticized for censoring their search results in China. What are your feelings about this? Why should Google, or why should Google not, produce different search results for different countries.
This is an interesting topic on which I have somewhat mixed feelings about. From just reading the question before I read the article I thought it was a no-brainer: that Google just definitely not censor their searches from one country to another. However, after reading, I find myself somewhat torn. Social norms vary vastly from one culture to another. Something that may be completely accepted in the United States could be looked down upon in China, or other countries. While it is important to have similiar results to similar searches, certain results maybe irrelevant in different cultures. So I say that Google should be allowed to censor certain articles based on the different countries in which they are searched.

  1. They will do what they need to do to work under the law in the countries where they can be used. The question then becomes, should they do business there? Google is #1 in the USA, but not in China. Some of your classmates agree, some don't... this the most interesting of questions to watch you guys answer. Thanks for your sharing of how your opinion changed.
